Some structures require setout accuracy beyond what standard techniques provide, such as bridges, steel structures and complex architectural installations. These projects have tolerances measured in millimetres, where a small error prevents prefabricated elements from fitting or causes structural connections to fail.

Millimeter-level setout is requires specialist equipment, careful precomputation, and rigorous independent checking at every stage. The cost of getting it wrong far exceeds the cost of thorough setout. On precision work, the survey is an investment, not an overhead.

We establish a high-precision control network around the site. From this, we can set-out the design positions of the structure accurately each time we visit site. We can verify positions after each installation step and adapt quickly if site conditions or design details change.

FAQ

Every site is different and there can be a lot of moving parts, but the questions are often the same. Here's what clients ask us most.

What is precise construction setout?

Precise construction setout is required for structures or installations where normal construction tolerances are insufficient, such as bridge bearings, precast panel connections, rail alignments, industrial machinery foundations, and precision pipelines. It uses higher-accuracy equipment and more rigorous verification procedures than standard setout.

What accuracy tolerances can Orogen achieve?

For precise setout applications, we can achieve 1-3mm positional accuracy using calibrated high-precision total stations and systematic checking procedures. The required tolerance is agreed with the design engineer before work starts.

What types of projects require precise setout?

Bridges and culverts where precast elements must align precisely, industrial structures with close-tolerance mechanical connections, precision pipelines where gradient accuracy is critical, tunnels and underground structures, and large public buildings where architectural finishes must align exactly.

How does precise setout differ from standard construction setout?

Precise setout involves additional instrument checks and calibration, more reference control points, independent verification of marked positions before construction proceeds, and more detailed documentation. The process takes longer per mark, but the investment is proportionate to the cost of getting it wrong.

How does Orogen verify its setout before handover to the contractor?

We carry out a series of independent checks. All verification is documented and provided to the project team as part of the setout record.

Can Orogen provide monitoring alongside precise setout for sensitive structures?

Yes. For projects where structures are being placed near existing infrastructure or in geotechnically sensitive areas, we can combine precise setout with a monitoring programme. This gives the project team confidence that the new structure is in the right place and that the surrounding ground and structures are responding as expected.
