Resource Management

10 years of Orogen

Dion Mead

A decade ago, Orogen set out with a straightforward idea: that better engineering and surveying, done by people who genuinely care, makes for better places to live and work. Ten years on, we are still finding that to be true.

When Orogen opened its doors in Wellington in 2016, the civil engineering and surveying industry was well served by large firms but underserved by smaller, nimble practices that could offer senior-level expertise without the overhead. We saw a gap, and we walked into it, supported from day one by a loyal team who believed in what we were building, and by clients who had trusted us with their work for 25 years or more. That foundation of long relationships and shared confidence made all the difference.

The name says something about our ambitions. An orogen is a belt of the earth's crust that has been compressed, folded, and pushed upward to form mountains. Mountains are obstacles, but they are also landmarks. They give you something to aim for. From the beginning, we wanted to be the kind of consultancy that helps clients find their way through the complex terrain of civil construction and development and come out the other side with something built well and built to last.

That is the pathfinder instinct at the heart of what we do.

Partnership over process

What we have learned over ten years is that clients do not really want engineering or surveying. What they want is clarity and confidence. They want to know the project is in safe hands, that someone is across the detail, and that if something unexpected comes up, it will be raised early and resolved. They want a partner, not a process.

That is what we try to be. We ask a lot of questions upfront, because understanding the problem properly is how you find the best path through it. We communicate clearly and honestly, even when the news is hard. And we follow through. Doing what we say we are going to do sounds simple, but clients tell us it is rarer than it should be, and that our commitment to it is something they value.

What we do

Orogen brings together civil engineering design, cadastral and engineering surveying, resource management planning, and construction contract administration under one roof. The breadth matters: clients tell us that having one team across the full project lifecycle, from early feasibility and consent through to construction support and final completion, saves them time, reduces friction, and means nothing falls through the gaps.

Our contract administration work under NZS 3910 is a particular point of pride. Acting as Engineer to the Contract, we provide clients with independent, rigorous oversight of construction projects, protecting their investment and keeping contractors accountable to their commitments. Our track record with regional councils, including complex consent and stormwater engineering in the Greater Wellington region, speaks for itself.

The people behind the practice

We have never tried to be a large firm. What we have tried to be is a tight, talented team that punches well above its weight. Over the past ten years, that team has grown steadily, and today Orogen is made up of licensed cadastral surveyors, civil engineers, planners, and contract specialists with deep expertise and a genuine commitment to each other and to the work.

The culture here matters to us. We are honest with clients, even when that means having a hard conversation. We own our mistakes and fix them. Several clients have told us that this kind of accountability feels refreshing, and that is something we take seriously and want to protect as we grow.

A new website for a new decade

We are marking our tenth year with a new website, and we think it is the best reflection yet of who Orogen is and what we offer.

The new site is designed to make it easy to understand what we do, how we work, and who you would be working with. It features a growing library of project case studies, up-to-date profiles of our team, and straightforward guidance on how to start a conversation with us.

It is built for the clients we have and the clients we want to earn: people who value genuine partnership, who want a consultancy that listens and follows through, and who will treat their project with the same care we would give our own.

Thank you

Ten years is a good milestone to pause and look back. When we do, we see a long list of projects we are proud of, clients who have become long-term partners, and a team that has grown in skill and confidence with every year.

None of it would have been possible without the people who backed us early. To the staff who joined us when Orogen was just an idea, and to the clients who had worked with us for decades and chose to come with us when we started out on our own: thank you. You are the reason we are still here and still growing.

We look forward to the next ten years, and to finding the way, together.
