We've learned how to navigate the rules, the terrain, and the people who shape them. That's what a Pathfinder does: uncover the route that gets things moving, built, and approved.

Our story
It all started in a garage
Founded in 2016, Orogen was born from a desire to do things differently in the engineering and surveying industry. It all started in a garage - literally.

Our founders, Dion Mead and Darcy Brittliff, left big corporate consultancies with a straightforward idea: you don't need to be big to move mountains, just smart enough to find the path through. They'd seen the corporate machine up close - the layers, the meetings, the endless process that slowed everything down. More than that, they'd seen the clients waiting, hoping, and paying for work that could have been clearer, faster, and better. So they left.

They set up in a Tawa garage, armed with decades of experience and a vision for something different: a practice that would stay hands-on, stay honest, and stay in it with clients until the job was properly done. No fixed templates. No one-size-fits-all. Just people with the know-how to read the terrain and find a pathway through.

From that garage, Orogen has grown into a tight-knit team of around 25 professionals, operating from offices in Wellington and Kāpiti. Licensed cadastral surveyors, chartered civil engineers, planning consultants, and environmental specialists - all under one roof. Most of our work comes from repeat clients and referrals. We think that says something about the trust we've built.
From humble beginnings, we set out with a simple goal. Not to be the biggest, but to be the best.

How we work is just as important as what we produce.

At Orogen, our company culture and values guide every project. These aren't aspirational statements on a wall - they are the behaviours clients see and comment on, and the things we hold ourselves accountable to every day.
Hands-On & Accountable
We keep our boots on the ground. Senior staff don't hide in boardrooms - you'll find them on site, in design reviews, and in the hard conversations when something goes wrong. If there's an issue, we own it and fix it at our own cost. We do what we say we'll do. If plans change, we adapt quickly and see it through. Clients tell us this kind of accountability feels refreshing - and that's something we take seriously and intend to protect as we grow.
No Fixed Templates
Every project gets a fresh, tailored approach. We start by genuinely listening - what does the client actually need, what makes this site unique, and what is the constraint that everyone else will have missed? Then we find the solution that fits. That might mean combining disciplines in a way we haven't before, front-loading the feasibility work to head off a problem downstream, or telling a client honestly that what they have in mind isn't the best path. We're problem solvers, not process followers.
Team Continuity
When you engage Orogen, you get a team that stays with you. The people who plan your project will be the ones who deliver it - right through to the last certification. This isn't just good service; it's how we maintain quality. The surveyor who did the topographic survey knows the site. The engineer who designed the infrastructure knows the consent conditions. Continuity builds deep project knowledge, and that knowledge protects your programme and your budget.
Integrated Thinking
Because we house multiple disciplines under one roof, we naturally think across boundaries. Our surveyors consider planning implications in their measurements. Our engineers think about construction practicality in their designs. Our planners flag infrastructure constraints before consent is lodged. This integrated mindset reduces the rework, the surprises, and the gaps that multiply when disciplines sit in different firms. One team, one set of project data, one point of accountability.
Integrity & Community
We do what's right, not what's easiest. When we make an error, we tell the client immediately, fix it at our cost, and improve our process so it doesn't happen again. We also care about the communities and environments our work shapes. A mantra here is to leave things better than we found them - in how we design for long-term performance, how we manage environmental obligations on site, and how we engage with the communities affected by the projects we deliver. Several of our clients have become long-term partners precisely because they trust us to operate this way.
