In areas where the public main cannot deliver adequate pressure - typically elevated platforms or hilly terrain - a water supply pump station boosts pressure to meet domestic demand and firefighting requirements. Pressure system design involves hydraulic analysis of the full supply system, pump selection, transient surge assessment, rising main design, and the design of valve chambers and control systems that make the station operable and maintainable.
A water supply pump station that cannot maintain pressure under peak demand - or that generates surge pressures that damage the pipe network - is a safety and reliability risk. Wellington Water has specific requirements for pump station design, commissioning, and acceptance, including standby power, surge protection, telemetry integration, and maintenance access standards. A station that does not meet those requirements will not be adopted into the network, and the development it is intended to serve cannot be completed.
We carry out hydraulic analysis of the full supply system under peak demand and firefighting flow conditions, select pumps to meet the performance requirements across the full operating range, and assess surge risk using transient hydraulic analysis. We design the civil, mechanical, and electrical elements of the station and coordinate Wellington Water's acceptance requirements from the outset - not as a final check - including standby power provision, surge protection, SCADA integration, and access for maintenance. We manage the commissioning programme and prepare the documentation Wellington Water requires to accept the station into the network.
